Una Terra, Unum Mare
7–8 May 2027 | UCL, London, and online Submission deadline: 5 January 2027 I am pleased to share the call for papers for the 12th Annual London Conference on Belarusian Studies, which I am helping to organise. The conference brings together researchers working on Belarus to present new work, exchange ideas, and build scholarly connections […]
In this “thoughts, texts, and tunes” post, I’m short on ideas and long on catching up with current events. I begin with some first-hand impressions of the 11th ICCEES World Congress in London, UK, and then move on to a series of reflections on current affairs across the post-Soviet space. My reflections survey the new […]
I am happy to announce that Russian language and Chinese language versions of my personal website have finally gone live. If you read one or other of these languages, please give them a look. To commemorate this achievement, I have included some stirring and (unintentionally?) homoerotic Soviet-era propaganda posters promoting Soviet-Chinese bilateral cooperation.
This past Friday and Saturday, 28–29 April 2023, was the eighth annual Belarusian Studies in the 21st Century conference. This review begins with a short summary of the conference. I describe a few of the panel presentations and then relay some of the key insights from the 2023 Annual London Lecture on Belarusian studies delivered by Dr Paul Hansbury (whose new book is pictured in the featured image for this post). I conclude the discussion of the conference with some of my own reflections on Belarus-China relations.
This is the first in a series of weekly reviews. These reviews are reflections on what I’m thinking about and reading in relation to current events and my professional life. This week, I reflect on Bill Clinton’s comments about denuclearising post-Soviet Ukraine.
China-Belarus ties, particularly economic development, will likely remain on ice until relations with Belarus’s European neighbours are normalised. The Lukashenka regime is doubling down on its path of state repression. This foreshadows a continued deterioration of relations with the EU. Flagship Belarus-China projects (such as the Great Stone Industrial Park) rely on cross-border trade. Thus, while Chinese officials may offer words of support for the Lukashenka regime, the Belarus-China relationship will struggle to develop in an international climate of alarm and distrust.

Each year, the capital of China’s Xinjiang province, Urumqi, is host to one of two annually alternating exhibitions: the China Eurasia Expo or the Eurasia Commodity and Trade Expo. The sixth China Eurasia Expo takes place 30 August to 1 September, 2018. The China Eurasia Expo “serves as an important platform for China to establish diplomatic relations […]
The following post is a product of my preparations for a workshop at UCL (University College London) on China’s new Silk Road—the myriad of infrastructure projects, bilateral agreements, and huge sums of Chinese financing that top Beijing officials say will lead to a “community of common destiny” that is “[g]uided by the [ancient] Silk Road […]
In a December article for the Moscow Carnegie Center, Alexander Gabuev (2017) insightfully argued China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is so broad that it ceases to be a useful way to understand Chinese foreign policy. Meanwhile, since 2014, China has managed to remain an ally to both Ukraine and Russia, providing support to both […]
