I am happy to announce that Russian language and Chinese language versions of my personal website have finally gone live. If you read one or other of these languages, please give them a look. This past Friday and Saturday, 28–29 April 2023, was the eighth annual Belarusian Studies in the 21st Century conference. This review begins with a short summary of the conference. I describe a few of the panel presentations and then relay some of the key insights from the 2023 Annual London Lecture on Belarusian studies delivered by Dr Paul Hansbury (whose new book is pictured in the featured image for this post). I conclude the discussion of the conference with some of my own reflections on Belarus-China relations.

China-Belarus ties, particularly economic development, will likely remain on ice until relations with Belarus’s European neighbours are normalised. The Lukashenka regime is doubling down on its path of state repression. This foreshadows a continued deterioration of relations with the EU. Flagship Belarus-China projects (such as the Great Stone Industrial Park) rely on cross-border trade. Thus, while Chinese officials may offer words of support for the Lukashenka regime, the Belarus-China relationship will struggle to develop in an international climate of alarm and distrust.
